"Engineering Design Bureau"
"Engineering Design Bureau" is one of the leading enterprises, involved in the development of weapon systems for the Navy and for export. Its history started with the Leningrad-based plant named after Karl Marx (former "Novyi Lessner" Plant), then manufactureing textile machines.
In 1926, after the adoption of the Navy development programme, a design bureau, was established within the plant to develop torpedo tubes for surface ships, torpedo boats, and submarines.
In 1942 the plant was evacuated to Moscow and ranamed into Plant №709. In 1946 the plant's design bureau was transformed into Special Design Bureau "SKB-709".
In 1957 SKB-709 became an independent enterprise and got it modern name - Engineering Design Bureau.
By that time Engineering Design Bureau had accumulated a vast experience in developing torpedo tubes of different types, as well as mastered theoretical numeric and experimenal design methods. Later it started developing torpedo pre-launch preparation systems, missile-torpedoes and cruise missiles.
Important milestones in Engineering Design Bureau activities were marked by development of deck-mounted launchers for anti-ship, antisubmarine and attack missile systems of the Termit, Progress, Malakhit, Metel, Rastrub, Moskit and Uran types. While implementing these projects, the design bureau mastered application of light welded-alloy structures and polyurethane heat-shielding coatings.
The design bureau furhter expanded its area of activities by developing the Rubezh coastal mobile missile system and PK-10 decoy dispensing system. Its latest designs are the Bal-E coastal mobile missile system, which successfully passed the state acceptance tests in 2004, and the Prosvet decoy dispensing system.
Thanks to its production base the enterprise can manufacture experimental samples, prototypes and in some cases series products.
During its 50-years history Engineering Design Bureau has developed more than 120 types of antiship and antisubmarine weapon systems. Weapons, developed by the design bureau, are mounted on warships of the Russian Navy and navies in more than 25 countries of the world.
